Nambawan Super Limited (NSL) officially announced the appointment of Mr. Richard Sinamoi as the Chairman of the NSL Trustee Board of Directors. Mr Sinamoi was appointed to replace Mr. Reginald Monagi, who stepped down as Chairman in October 2024 after serving an additional term at the direction of the regulator, the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG). Mr. Monagi served as an ordinary Board member from 2014 to 2019 and as Chairman of the Board from 2020 to 2024.

The announcement was made by Dame Meg Taylor, Deputy Chairperson of the Board, who also expressed gratitude to Mr. Monagi for his contributions and dedicated service to the Funds 235,888 Members.

In acknowledging Mr. Monagi’s contributions, Dame Meg Taylor took the opportunity to highlight his notable achievements.

“Mr. Reginald Monagi’s tenure as Chairman of Nambawan Super has been marked by strong leadership and significant achievements. Since joining in 2014, Mr Monagi with Directors of the Board over time has ensured consistent growth of the Fund for both membership and Funds Under Management. Membership growth grew from 146,000 to over 235,000 Members, and Funds Under Management doubling to over K11 billion. He successfully guided the Fund through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, implemented the Niupela Pasin strategy, and enabled remote operations to ensure continued service to Members.”

“Under his leadership, the Fund delivered record Unemployment Benefit payouts, expanded Financial Literacy Training to over 17,000 Members, and advanced major investment projects like Rangeview Plaza and Moki Business Park. He also led successful efforts to recover long-standing arrears from the State and secure repossession of the 9-Mile Bushwara land after 30 years.”

In his farewell dinner, Mr Monagi’s parting words to Board, Management and Staff were to “ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT by your Members”. And in saying so, presented what he called, “DO THE RIGHT THING” baton to Chairman elect Mr Sinamoi. He asked that the baton be passed on to successive Chairmans with the same message which he hoped would form part of NSL Organizational Culture in their provision of services to their Members.

Mr Monagi thanked past and present Board members, Management and Staff for their collective efforts in the achievements of significant results for its Members. 

"In line with the NSL Company Constitution and the Board Charter, and in accordance with the Bank of PNG Prudential Standards, my fellow Directors and I have resolved to appoint Mr. Richard Sinamoi as Chairperson," stated Dame Meg Taylor. 

“Mr. Sinamoi is a qualified professional with over 20 years’ experience in the superannuation and financial services industry, having worked for the Comrade Trustee Services Limited (CTSL) as Chief Executive Officer until January 2017.  He has served as a Director on several Boards for both commercial entities and charitable organisations, including Paradise Company Limited, Credit Corporation (PNG) Limited and Transpacific Assurance Limited. He has Executive Management experience in industries ranging from food & beverage, general insurance, trustee services, financial services and micro banking.” 

Dame Meg further added, “In his statement as the incoming Chairman in NSL’s 2024 Annual Report, Mr. Sinamoi has stated that under his leadership; NSL will maintain momentum by focusing on five key strategic priorities: enhancing corporate governance and stakeholder engagement, advancing organisational transformation, progressing the 9-Mile Land project, exploring new investment opportunities, and collaborating with the State to resolve outstanding public service Employer contributions.”

Ok Tedi Mining Limited reached a significant milestone in its mining operations with the commissioning and deployment of its first-ever Reverse Circulation (RC) Drill Rig. The rig was officially put into operation on Sunday, 11 May 2025.

The successful introduction of the RC Drill Rig by the Mine Geology and Grade Control team, with the company’s Mine Technical Services Department, marks a major step forward in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of geological data collection.

This advancement will directly support improved short-term and long-term mine planning, enabling more strategic decision-making in ore extraction.

Manager Mine Technical Services, James Bu, said that this investment demonstrated Ok Tedi’s commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.

“The RC Drill Rig will play a vital role with our Mine Geology and Grade Control team in optimising our mining processes and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our operations.

“The idea of engaging a RC drill to close gaps in the Resource Model (RM) and to enable a high confidence planning output for short term and long-term planning, commenced in 2017.

‘’There wasn’t much traction over the years until 2023 when Ok Tedi’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) recognised the value that such program can add to the business and made the commitment to purchase the RC drill rig and revive the RC drill program,” Mr Bu said.

“Given the geometry of the other ore bodies apart from the mine pit ore. Widely spaced resource drillings of 50m x 50m have not captured well the changes in the ore quality and characteristics of the other smaller size ore types which carry high grade material.”

"Monthly reconciliation data has consistently shown a +10% variance in ore tonnes and Copper (Au) and Gold (Au) feed grades between the Resource Model (RM) and the Grade Control Model (GCM). This variance indicates lower confidence in the RM output, with significant implications for mine planning and forecasting."

“In order to close this gap, RC drilling program will be carried out in the targeted areas with >10% variance, with closely spaced drilling of 20m x 20m, and will also provide data for 3 benches at a time. The data will be used to create an interim model or used to update the Grade Control model for the planning team to use for planning and budgeting purposes,” Mr Bu said.

RC drilling is widely recognised for its cost-effectiveness and its ability to deliver high-quality geological samples quickly and reliably. It also prevents cross-contamination and enables a large number of sample bags in a short amount of time.

The first samples were produced on Wednesday, 14 May, with the historic first hole yielding an excellent sample return weighing 7 kilograms.

By incorporating this technology into its operations, Ok Tedi aims to strengthen its resource modelling and grade control practices, further reinforcing its position as an industry leader in responsible and innovative mining.

Barakau, a picturesque Motuan village just 25 minutes outside Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, is making waves in environmental conservation through the Eda Davara Marine Sanctuary Project.

Named after the phrase “Our Sea” in the local language, the initiative is driven by passionate youth advocating for traditional indigenous practices and sustainable marine conservation.

Founded by Dikatauna Kwa and her university colleagues, Eda Davara began with mangrove research and restoration before expanding into broader ecological and community engagement efforts.

With visits to Barakau Primary School, the village ward councilor and a strong network in several universities in Port Moresby, the sanctuary project grew from strength to strength throughout the years.

Over the years, it has flourished into a multi-faceted program with six specialized teams: Administration, Marketing, Science, Policy and Governance, Tourism, and Community Projects.

A key achievement of the initiative is the EcoScholars Internship Program, which currently involves 13 students from universities across PNG -- University of Papua New Guinea, Pacific Adventists University, and the Institute of Business Studies University.

These young leaders bring expertise from fields such as economics, law, science, and tourism, ensuring a holistic approach to conservation.

Beyond its local impact, the Eda Davara Marine Sanctuary Project has established international partnerships that enable Papua New Guinea to participate in global environmental dialogues.

Its recent selection as a recipient of the Young Pacific Leaders (YPL) Small Grants highlights its growing influence in the region.

Eco-tourism plays a crucial role in supporting the project and the local community. The Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH) today presented a cheque of K200,000 to take up Gold Sponsorship for the upcoming 2nd Papua New Guinea Special Economic Summit that will be hosted in Port Moresby from August 31st- September 3rd, 2025.

The Minister for International Trade and Investment, Hon. Richard Maru, thanked the Managing Director for KCH, Professor David Kavanamur, and the Minister for State Enterprises, Hon. William Duma, for their support towards this very important Summit.

Minister Maru said: “We are very happy to work with KCH. We look forward to receiving their Submissions for the Madang Integrated SEZ and the Portside SEZ so we can have them processed and approved by the NEC and the SEZ Authority will grant them licenses subject to KCH meeting all the regulatory requirements.”

Minister Maru and Professor Kavanamur also gave an update on the establishment of the new cannery in Madang.

“We are also happy to announce that for the cannery in Madang, following the clearance of the MOU by the State Solicitor, by tomorrow the Shareholders Agreement will be finalized between the three shareholders- KCH, Madang Provincial Government and RD Corporation to pave way for the launching of the tuna canning project within what used to be called the PMIZ but now the Madang Integrated SEZ. The Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, will be invited to officiate at this launch will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025 in Madang. The Governor for Madang, Hon. Ramsey Pariwa, will be meeting with us to finalize the program for this historic launch.”

“This project was initiated by the Somare Government has been delayed by over three Governments. The Marape-Rosso Government will finally deliver this very important project this year. It is going to be a very significant milestone as we celebrate 50 years of Independence. It will signal the start of the very aggressive push by the Government to have all our fish caught in our waters to be processed onshore. We are waiting for the National Fisheries Authority to bring the Domestication Policy, but work starts this year.”

“It is our hope that in the next couple of years we will completely ban the unprocessed fish exports from PNG and in the process, we will create over 100,000 new jobs and revenue inflows will grow from less than K1 billion billion to over K5 billion from licensing of boats, taxes from companies, personal income taxes and GST. The new 300MT cannery project will cost K160 million. The State’s share of the equity funds is ready and will be released to the new JV Company to be called the ‘Kumul Fishing Limited’ as soon as the Project Agreement is signed,” said Minister Maru.

The new Board and Management for the JV Company will be appointed in the coming weeks and the company will be ready to start the construction of the new cannery after the launch next month.

Minister Maru thanked the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, KCH, RD, Madang Provincial Government and all the partners for all their support towards the establishment of the new cannery which will be owned by our Government and the Madang Provincial Government on behalf of our people.

“I want to thank the Marape-Rosso Government for the foresight and the determination to finally deliver the PMIZ decision as part of our Take Back PNG initiative,” said Minister Maru.

The Minister for International Trade and Investment, Hon. Richard Maru, today, confirmed that the Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape, is set to officially launch the Papua New Guinea Special Economic Zone Foundation Policy (2025- 2032) on Sunday evening of June 15, 2025, at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby.

“I want to thank all the sponsors of the inaugural Papua New Guinea (PNG) Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Summit that was hosted in 2023, and all Departments and Agencies and everyone who cooperated in providing input to this very important foundation policy. This is the first time that PNG will have a foundation SEZ policy. The launch of this policy will result in the current SEZ Act of 2019 being repealed and a new Act will be enacted to reflect the changes in the foundation policy,” said Minister Maru.

“This is a very important policy. Provinces, districts and businesses who wish to be involved in SEZs need to get the copy of the Policy to know the processes on how to establish SEZs and apply for SEZ licenses,” Minister Maru alluded.

Minister Maru said at this stage, PNG was set to establish up to seven new SEZs this year.

“Apart from the Paga Hill SEZ that has already been licensed, the Government has recently approved three SEZs including the Sea Park SEZ, Finschhafen Integrated SEZ and the Central Province Industrial Park, and we are expecting to announce a few more over the next month. This is a very exciting year for our country with more interests coming from investors from within the country and outside the country to establish their businesses within the SEZs,” said Minister Maru.

“If a country like the Philippines, which is a one-third our size, can have over 420 SEZs driving their economic growth at the rate of 5% per annum, generating over US$63 billion in export income, and creating over 4 million jobs, we can do it too. SEZs will be the key driver of sustainable long-term economic growth in the country.”

Geopacific Resources Limited is pleased to announce significant gold results from surface auger sampling at the Wayai Creek SSW and Little MacKenzie prospects within its 100% owned 1.67 Moz Woodlark Gold Project in Papua New Guinea (‘Woodlark’, the ‘Project’).

The auger sampling is part of an ongoing program of field mapping and sampling activities focussed on the under-explored southwest corner of the Project, part of the Woodlark King Mining Centre (Figures 1 and 2). The area is highly prospective and is supported by favourable host lithology, complex magnetic responses, favourable structures, and anomalous geochemistry, indicating significant potential to host economic gold mineralisation.

Analysis of the results has highlighted several large coherent >0.1 g/t gold anomalies with peak result to 63.6 g/t Au at the northernmost sample line at Little MacKenzie where it remains open to the north, and numerous adjacent samples of over 1.0 g/t Au in both locations (refer Table 1, Figures 3 and 5, and JORC Table 1 at the end of this release for further information on the sampling and assaying methodology).

These prospects will be progressively advanced through further surface sampling and trenching prior to drilling later in 2025 as part of the current exploration drill program. A total of 30,000 metres of RC and diamond drilling is scheduled to commence in June 2025 to extend known gold mineralisation and test new targets to increase mineral resources.

Geopacific CEO James Fox said: “These results confirm the strong prospectivity of the Woodlark King area, with high-grade auger results and extensive surface anomalies extending known mineralisation. The Little MacKenzie and Wayai Creek targets are shaping up as compelling additions to our pipeline and with a major 30,000 metre drill program set to commence this month, we are excited by the potential to build on our 1.67 Moz resource base.”

The Hidden Valley Mining Project revised Community Development Agreement (CDA) was successfully initialed yesterday (Friday June 13) in Lae after 2 months of negotiations.

The agreement was initialed by:

• Mining Minister Hon Rainbo Paita on behalf of the State.
• Morobe Governor Hon Luther Wenge on behalf of the Morobe Provincial Government, and its entire lower level governments.
• Nakuwi Association Inc (Landowners) Chairman Wayang Kawa on behalf of his association.
• Steven Rooney on behalf of the developer of the project Hidden Valley Mine.

Present to witness the ceremony were the Vice Minister for Mining and Member for Bulolo Hon Sam Basil Jr, Member for Wau-Waria Hon Marsh Narewec, Managing Director of the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) Jerry Garry, General Manager for Hidden Valley Mine Steven Rooney, landowners, State Team and other stakeholders.

Hon Paita said at the ceremony that he was pleased with the outcome of the negotiations. He assured all parties that he would do his best in ensuring that the National Executive Council (NEC) deliberates on the agreement in a timely manner, so that parties could start benefiting.

Vice Minister Hon Basil Jr said his district and Local Level Governments (LLGs) had missed out on benefits in the past. He said this time around, he had comprehensively captured his districts’ development aspirations in his position paper, and urged the relevant state agencies and the government to carefully consider his paper.

Governor Wenge said he was satisfied with the content of the agreement and thanked Mr Garry and the State Team for effectively progressing the negotiations, a sentiment which was also shared by Hon Narewec.

Mr Garry on behalf of the State Team commended the leadership provided by the Morobean political leaders in progressing the CDA to this stage. “Everything falls and rises on leadership,” said MD Garry. He said the initialing of the CDA was an outcome of quality and effective leadership provided by the leaders of Morobe.

Major benefits streams contained in the agreement include Royalties, Special Support Grants (SSGs), Tax Credit Schemes, Business Development Plan, Training & Employment Plan, Women In Mining (WIM) and Law & Order amongst others.

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape has praised the strengthening of bilateral relations between Papua New Guinea and France, following a landmark meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron during the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference.

Prime Minister Marape described the bilateral as “one of the most significant engagements” for Papua New Guinea at the global stage, marking a high point in France–PNG relations. “France is not just a distant European partner. It is a global power with permanent seats on the UN Security Council, G7, and G20. That President Macron chose to meet with us first, among nearly 150 world leaders, speaks volumes of the mutual respect we now enjoy,” he said.

Key Outcomes of the Bilateral Meeting:

• High-Level Representation for PNG’s 50th Anniversary: France will send a senior government minister to join PNG’s 50th Independence celebrations in September 2025.
• Visa-On-Arrival for PNG Citizens: Prime Minister Marape confirmed that discussions are progressing towards granting Papua New Guineans online access or visa-on-arrival privileges to France and the EU, eliminating the need for third-country visa applications.
• Finalisation of Shiprider Agreement: The two leaders committed to finalising a Shiprider Agreement to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in PNG waters.
• Climate and Environmental Leadership: President Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to climate change mitigation and marine conservation. PNG and France will cooperate on preserving forest and ocean ecosystems, including the ongoing Managalas Conservation Project in Northern Province.
• Opposition to Deep Sea Mining: Both leaders agreed on the need for rigorous scientific studies before allowing deep sea mining. Prime Minister Marape reiterated PNG’s national policy against any such activity in the absence of proven environmental safeguards.
• Special Economic Zone for French Investment: Prime Minister Marape proposed the establishment of a designated special economic zone in PNG to attract French industries, highlighting PNG’s strategic position between Asia and the Pacific.
• PNG Embassy in Paris: PNG will soon appoint an ambassador to Paris, further institutionalising relations, in reciprocity for France’s diplomatic presence in Port Moresby.
• Support for PNG’s UN Ocean Conference Bid: In a major diplomatic win, President Macron announced France’s full support for Papua New Guinea’s bid to host a future United Nations Ocean Conference. This endorsement was formally declared during the Pacific Islands Forum session.
• Defence Cooperation: France has agreed to facilitate a visit by PNG’s Defence Minister to explore cooperation in enhancing PNG’s air and maritime surveillance capabilities.

Prime Minister Marape emphasised the enduring value of personal diplomacy in global relations, comparing today’s rapport with President Macron to the historic friendship between Sir Michael Somare and Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam that led to PNG’s independence in 1975.

“We should not underestimate the power of warm, personal relationships in advancing our national interests. This is how you build legacies that outlast political terms—through sincere engagement,” Prime Minister Marape said.

He added that France is now a close partner in the Pacific, particularly on issues of climate justice, forest and ocean stewardship, and regional development resilience.

“We are a forest nation and an ocean nation. Together, our ecosystems absorb far more carbon than we emit. It’s time we are recognised—and compensated—for that contribution,” he said, referring to PNG’s push for global climate financing tied to forest conservation and ocean protection.

Prime Minister Marape closed by reaffirming PNG’s commitment to the BBNJ Treaty on the conservation of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, noting that PNG will lodge its ratification instruments with the UN during the September 2025 General Assembly in New York.

Papua New Guinea has signed a landmark treaty for the governance of the high seas at the 3rd  United Nations Oceans Conference in Nice, France.

Prime Minister Hon. James Marape signed the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement) on Monday (09.06.25).

The signing of this important treaty followed soon after Prime Minister Marape addressed the conference with Papua New Guinea’s Country Statement, highlighting the importance in the role the ocean plays in the livelihood of the people of Papua New Guinea and the Pacific.

“Papua New Guinea is proud to stand together with the international community in signing the BBNJ Agreement. It reflects our unwavering support for multilateral action and responsible stewardship of our global commons,” said PM Marape as he arrived on Sunday in France to join 148 leaders from across the world in the UN conference on ocean governance and management.

The signing of the BBNJ Agreement continues PNG’s efforts in protecting its marine resources beyond its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

As an existing member to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the signing reaffirms PNG’s strong commitment to upholding the Convention and protecting the Pacific Ocean.

PM Marape said, “We are committed to ensuring the relevant international laws governing the sustainable use and management of our country’s oceans and maritime resources are upheld and carefully articulated in our national policies, strategies, and plans.

“In this spirit, I have the distinct pleasure and honour to announce that today, Papua New Guinea signed up to the Special Treaty Event, the BBNJ Agreement (High Seas Treaty, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 19 June 2023. We will work toward its ratification.”

He also reaffirmed PNG’s continued support toward the treaty on plastics which is being currently negotiated and urged that this be concluded successfully soon.

The BBNJ Agreement, under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, was adopted on 19 June 2023 by the Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction convened under the auspices of the UN. It has become the third implementing agreement to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Under the overall objective of the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, for the present and in the long-term, through effective implementation of the relevant provisions of the Convention and further international cooperation and coordination, the Agreement addresses four main issues:

• Marine genetic resources, including the fair and equitable sharing of benefits;

• Measures such as area-based management tools, including marine protected areas;

• Environmental impact assessments; and

• Capacity-building and the transfer of marine technology.

The Agreement also addresses a number of “cross-cutting issues”, establishes a funding mechanism and sets up institutional arrangements, including a Conference of the Parties and various subsidiary bodies, a Clearing-House Mechanism and a secretariat.

The Agreement is open for signature by all States and regional economic integration organizations from 20 September 2023 to 20 September 2025, and will enter into force 120 days after the date of deposit of the sixtieth instrument of ratification, approval, acceptance or accession.

There are 33 two-bedroom apartments with separate lounge, kitchen and dining areas. These two-bedroom apartments are 110 square meters in total. The apartments each have one king-size bed in master room, second bedroom has 2 queen beds, both rooms with private walk-in bathrooms.

Both the one bed room apartments and two bedroom apartments’ guests have access to hotel facilities and services including the gymnasium, resort pool, in-house dry cleaning, and concierge and airport transfers. Guests have on-site secure car parking and six food and beverages outlets to choose from without leaving the hotel.

Ok Tedi Mining Limited recently received the Gazettal Notice for its Ok Tedi Environmental Act (OTEMA) 2019 from Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) of Papua New Guinea.

Ok Tedi began operations before Papua New Guinea’s Environment Act 2000 was introduced. Consequently, the company operated under its own legislation - the Environment Regime 2001, created by the 9th Supplemental Agreement to the Ok Tedi Act 1976. That regime was formally replaced last year, on gazettal, by the OTEMA.

The OTEMA 2019 was gazetted on August 30, 2024, following the formal endorsement by the Governor General. This new legislation aims to align Ok Tedi’s environmental obligation with the Environment Act 2000 which also governs other operations. It also paves way for CEPA to increases its regulatory oversight over Ok Tedi’s operations.

General Manager Operations Ben Burger expressed gratitude for the Gazettal Notice, emphasising the Company’s commitment to responsible mining.

“Ok Tedi successfully operates within the OTEMA guidelines through integration of comprehensive environmental controls into our operations. We recognise the benefits of the OTEMA gazettal to continue to work closely work with CEPA as our environmental regulator to ensure our systems and controls continue to be effective,” said Mr Burger.

Echoing this sentiment, General Manager Social Performance and Sustainability Jesse Pile highlighted Ok Tedi’s long-standing dedication to environmental stewardship.

“As one of the oldest mining companies in the country, we are proud of our mature approach to environmental practices. Our Tyre Pyrolysis program is one example, where waste tyres, a product at the end of its life cycle, is converted into useful char and pyrolysis oil which is then reused as fuel in our operations,” said Mr Pile.

Looking ahead, Mr Pile mentioned that Ok Tedi is considering other initiatives to innovate waste management solutions further for its many wastes streams, as part of its goal to be environmentally responsible by creating values from waste and set new benchmarks for sustainable practices in Papua New Guinea’s mining sector.

CEPA Managing Director Jude Tukuliya commended Ok Tedi’s pioneering efforts in superior waste management that benefit both local communities and the natural environment.

He said the initiatives introduced at Ok Tedi are commendable and should serve as a model for other mines across PNG.

Plastic-Free starts with me – this was the bold theme adopted by Ok Tedi Mining Limited has it joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day (WED) on June 05th .

Ok Tedi has adopted the slogan “Plastic-Free Starts With Me!” alignment with this year’s global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution”, a call to action to reduce the environmental threat of plastic waste.

The Environment Department organises activities annually at Ok Tedi operational sites to mark WED targeting behaviour change among employees, business partners and the community.

Manager Environment Erizo Kepe said in line with this year’s global theme and Ok Tedi’s slogan, activities and messaging focus on minimising plastic waste using the 5R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, Recycle, and Rethink.

“We want to promote reducing the use of plastic, reusing plastic in alternative ways, refuse to use single use plastics, recycle plastic products, and rethink using plastic by making informed decisions.”

“This initiative reaffirms our commitment to sustainable environmental practices through community engagement. We believe that change begins with shared responsibility and individual actions,” said Ms Kepe.

Activities organised to mark WED will include:

1. General Clean-A-Thon/Tree Planting in work sites and communities;
2. Environmental Performance Awards for departments or teams demonstrating outstanding or improved environmental performance in 2024.
3. General Workplace Competition on Plastic Waste Audit - departments conduct an audit to assess and reduce their single-use plastic consumption;
4. Trash Monster Challenge for Grade 7 and 8 students to design and build a “trash monster” using only waste, recycled, or repurposed plastics; and
5. Scientific Research & Write-Up for Grade 11 and 12 students to submit a scientific report on one of two critical topics; Impacts of Microplastics on Human Health and Plastic Pyrolysis Plant and Its Benefits.

Ok Tedi has an ongoing commitment to improving environmental performance across all aspects of the company’s operations.

The company undertakes a comprehensive environmental monitoring program annually that is governed by the Ok Tedi Agreement (CMCA Agreement) as well as quarterly reporting against the Ok Tedi Environmental Management Act (OTEMA) 102 license conditions.

Ok Tedi spends over K200 million annually on environmental mitigation programs, significantly reducing the impact of sedimentation in upper Fly River and stabilised downstream water quality.

The effectiveness of its environmental controls is measured by monitoring for compliance against six key environmental values along the 1,000km riverine system that stretches from the mine to the Fly River delta.

• Downstream drinking water quality.
• Availability of aquatic resources such as fish and edible aquatic flora to meet community requirements.
• Safe edibility of aquatic resources.
• Availability of resources such as dry land on which to establish gardens, hunt and gather firewood and meet community requirements.
• Safe use of land resources for crops and natural forest resources included in the normal dietary intake of the local community.
• Navigability of the main Ok Tedi and Fly River channels by commercial and village sea crafts.

Another major environmental mitigation activity is the Bige Dredging, Stockpile and Rehabilitation Operations which manages the sediment loads in the Ok Tedi and Fly River. Ok Tedi has dredged approximately 438 million tonnes of sand from the river since 1998 at a cost of USD$60 million (K240 million) per annum. This operation has significantly contributed to reducing riverbed aggradation and the associated dieback.
