An Australian professional who arrived in Papua New Guinea for work on Friday, 28 August 2026, took time to explore the country’s history, culture and traditions through a guided Port Moresby tour arranged by Wisdom Travels Limited on 29 August 2026.
Mr Peter Smith said he came to PNG for work but also wanted to understand the nation beyond what is shared on social media. He specifically requested to visit Bomana War Cemetery, the National Museum, Parliament House, Nature Park, Koki Market and Ela Beach.
He was picked up from his hotel and taken on a tour of Port Moresby. He described the experience as emotional, particularly his visit to Bomana War Cemetery.
Mr Smith said the National Museum was the most important place to learn about Papua New Guinea’s culture.
“From there, I learned that Papua New Guinea is not just Port Moresby. It has a long, rich and beautiful history that is unique in the world, with more than 800 languages and diverse tribal cultures and ways of life,” he said.
“That is something we have forgotten in the West, and it makes me want to experience more of Papua New Guinea, not just the capital.”
Reflecting on his experience, Mr Smith encouraged visitors to get out and explore.
“From what you hear on social media, you get one picture. But Port Moresby is a city that is still growing. It is spread out, and the only way to really feel it is to get out and take a tour of different places,” he said.
He thanked Wisdom Travels Limited for organising the tour and taking him to the places he wanted to visit.
Mr Smith said he plans to return to Papua New Guinea to experience more of its culture, with a particular interest in visiting the Highlands.
