At the heart of Port Moresby General Hospital, one of Papua New Guinea’s busiest and most critical healthcare institutions, a quiet but powerful movement has been transforming patient care and operational needs.
Friends of Pomgen (FOPG) has emerged as one of the country’s most recognised charity initiatives, supporting hospital patients and frontline workers through the provision of medical equipment, supplies, and refurbishment.
Since its establishment, Friends of Pomgen has grown into a national charity brand that mobilises communities, businesses, and individuals to support operational needs through donations, sponsorships, and fundraising partnerships.
Supporting Over 800,000 Patients
In just a few short years, the organisation’s impact has been remarkable. Since 2021, Friends of Pomgen has supported more than 800,000 patients receiving treatment at Port Moresby General Hospital.
Through community-driven charity campaigns and fundraising initiatives, the organisation has helped bridge critical resource gaps across hospital wards.
To date, Friends of Pomgen has raised over K15 million in donations, including essential medical supplies, patient care items, and equipment distributed directly to hospital wards. In addition, more than K1 million in infrastructure and medical equipment has been provided to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to deliver quality care.
These contributions ensure that patients, many of whom travel from across the country seeking specialised treatment, have access to essential items that support recovery and comfort during their hospital stay.
A Trusted Partner in Patient Care
Over time, Friends of Pomgen has become a familiar and trusted presence within the hospital community.
Working closely with ward managers, nurses, and healthcare professionals, the organisation maintains stock supplies and carefully monitors needs across hospital wards. This close collaboration ensures that critical items are distributed where they are needed most, helping medical teams deliver better care to patients.
Because of this consistent support and commitment, Friends of Pomgen has earned the affectionate nickname “Blue Angels” among hospital staff and patients alike. Their presence has become synonymous with compassion, support, and reliability within the hospital environment.
A National Charity Brand
Beyond the hospital wards, Friends of Pomgen has built a strong public presence through extensive charity drives and fundraising campaigns that attract audiences nationwide.
With a growing digital footprint and consistent support from mainstream media outlets, particularly print and radio, the organisation has successfully raised awareness of healthcare needs while encouraging community participation in charitable giving.
Today, Friends of Pomgen stands as one of Papua New Guinea’s most prominent healthcare charity brands, driven by a shared vision of supporting patients and strengthening healthcare services.

Recognising the Heroes of Healthcare
As part of its continued commitment to strengthening healthcare partnerships, Friends of Pomgen is preparing to launch an important new initiative later this year.
In September, the organisation will host its inaugural “Hospital Heroes Program”, a special event dedicated to recognising and celebrating the contributions of medical professionals, corporate sponsors, donors, and community partners who have supported the organisation over the years.
The event will serve as a platform to honour those who have stood alongside Friends of Pomgen in its mission to support patients and improve healthcare delivery at Port Moresby General Hospital. By acknowledging these contributions, the programme aims to inspire continued collaboration between the healthcare sector, private businesses, and the wider community.
Looking Ahead
Friends of Pomgen continues to focus on supporting the hospital through refurbishment initiatives and unfunded priority projects identified by the hospital. These projects aim to improve patient facilities, upgrade infrastructure, and support departments facing resource shortages.
With the continued support of the community, corporate partners, and dedicated volunteers, the “Blue Angels” remain committed to enhancing patient care and supporting the hardworking medical professionals who serve thousands of people every day.
Ultimately, the story of Friends of Pomgen is a testament to the power of community. It demonstrates that when individuals, businesses, and organisations unite around a common cause, they can create meaningful change and improve the lives of patients and families across Papua New Guinea.
