PNGMPHSL, KSSL champion national content at PNG Resource Week 2025

The APEC Haus in Port Moresby became the centre of the nation’s resource sector from 28 to 31 July as the PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy (PNGCORE) staged the highly anticipated PNG Resource Week 2025 under the theme “50 Years of Resources Building PNG Communities.”

The annual gathering brought together senior government officials, industry leaders, landowner groups and other stakeholders to celebrate achievements, strengthen partnerships and highlight Papua New Guinea’s growing commitment to national participation in the resource industry.

Among the event’s prominent participants was PNG Mining and Petroleum Hospitality Services Ltd (PNGMPHSL), which returned to Resource Week with the goal of showcasing its joint venture, Kainantu Support Services Ltd (KSSL), as a working example of national content in practice.

Formed in 2024, KSSL began operations on 1 December that year at the K92 Mine, providing catering and camp management services. PNGMPHSL described the venture as not just a commercial partnership but also a vehicle for developing local capability and advancing national content in the sector.

During the four-day event, PNGMPHSL highlighted KSSL’s role in demonstrating how strategic local partnerships can deliver high-quality services while empowering Papua New Guineans to lead, manage and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

In line with its people-focused approach, the company brought several site-based employees to the event to expose them to industry trends and give them opportunities to network with other stakeholders.

“This time, I got to see and hear first-hand the steps being taken by companies in the resource sector on the importance of post-mining, particularly diversification after mining, and environmental and social rehabilitation programmes, including agriculture and livelihood development initiatives. Some of these are already being implemented by a few companies. It will be interesting to see in the coming years how these discussions take immediate effect in the surrounding communities,” said Dinah Oala, Group Services Manager of PNGMPHSL.

A key feature of the PNGMPHSL booth was its display of locally sourced consumables, showcasing domestic produce and brands — reinforcing the company’s commitment to strengthening local supply chains. The company said national content extends beyond employment to include enterprise development and market access.

By sourcing from local producers, PNGMPHSL and KSSL said they are contributing directly to economic participation across multiple sectors, creating wider ripple effects throughout the economy.

Staff from both companies also joined panel discussions, networking sessions and workshops on the future of national content in Papua New Guinea.

“National content is no longer a concept — it is a measurable, achievable reality. It is about shifting from participation to ownership and from opportunity to delivery. As a site-based staff member, attending PNG Resource Week 2025 was a transformational experience. It allowed me to connect to the wider national narrative — one where local talent drives national outcomes,” a KSSL representative said.

Organisers said PNG Resource Week 2025 was more than a showcase of industry achievements — it was a reflection of progress and a vision of a future in which Papua New Guineans are not merely beneficiaries of the resource sector but active leaders in it.

Through its promotion of KSSL, investment in employees and emphasis on local sourcing, PNGMPHSL said it remains committed to turning the vision of national content into practical action.
