Issue 2

The second issue of PNG Business News for 2026 explores the major developments, challenges and opportunities shaping Papua New Guinea’s economy, infrastructure and investment landscape.

Leading this edition is our cover story, “Built to Last: Future-Proofing PNG’s Maritime Network” (page 30), which examines the ambitious transformation underway at PNG Ports Corporation Limited. Managing 15 of Papua New Guinea’s 23 declared ports, PNG Ports handled 10.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2025 and supports an estimated K29 billion, or 22 per cent, of the nation’s GDP. With nearly all imports and exports moving through its facilities, the corporation plays a critical role in the country’s economy.

On page 10, our regular columnist, industry expert Michael McWalter, examines the critical distinction between petroleum resources and reserves in “Petroleum Resources and Reserves: PNG in a Global Context.” The article explores how misunderstandings of these terms can distort perceptions of oil and gas potential, influence investment decisions and contribute to serious economic policy errors.

Prime Minister James Marape outlines the government’s commitment to business, economic reform and long-term growth. He also encourages investors to look beyond traditional mining and petroleum industries, emphasizing opportunities across a broader range of sectors during Papua New Guinea’s 50th anniversary year. Environmental sustainability and economic development converge in “PNG Puts Blue Economy at Centre of Regional Growth Agenda During Melanesian Ocean Summit” (page 40).

Also in this issue, “ADB: PNG Growth to Ease to 3.6% in 2026, 3.4% in ’27 on External Shocks, Structural Constraints” (page 46) examines the latest economic outlook from the Asian Development Bank. The report assesses how external pressures, including higher energy and commodity prices, shipping disruptions and tighter financial conditions, may affect Papua New Guinea’s growth prospects in the coming years.
