The European Union (EU) has transferred EUR 4.25 million (around 17 million Kina) to the Government of PNG to support key national policies on Good Governance and Anti-Corruption in the Social, Law and Order Sector (SLOS). With this grant, the EU recognizes and supports the Government’s commitment to the promotion of Good Governance and the eradication of corruption, along with its commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The EU has already disbursed EUR 3 million in December 2021 and this is the second disbursement under the EU sector budget support ‘EU-PNG Partnership for Good Governance’. In line with the National Policies and Strategies, the EU support aims to contribute to the Government of PNG’s effort in strengthening the Good Governance and the Rule of Law in the country.

"Good Governance is fundamental for the economic growth of a country and remains at the core of EU’s development cooperation in PNG,” said the EU Ambassador to PNG, H.E. Jacques Fradin. “The EU has been working side by side with the Government of PNG supporting it in its fight against corruption and will continue to work together towards its eradications.”

The programme of support to Good Governance reforms intends to provide a total of EUR 26.9 million (or approximately 110 million Kina). In addition to the budget support, which is linked to jointly-agreed performance indicators, the EU has also mobilised technical assistance under the 'PNG Anti-corruption project' (implemented jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)) and a complementary assistance to the SLOS Secretariat to support in its coordination role, crucial for supporting economic growth and strengthening the national security.

The disbursement of this second payment comes after a positive decision of the Budget Support Steering Committee of the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships in October 2023.
