For the seventh consecutive year, the PNG Industrial & Mining Resources Exhibition pulled out all the stops to deliver a successful event on the 21st to 22nd June 2023 and set a new benchmark with its number of participants.

Throughout the years, the event has continued to serve as an essential and valuable meeting place for industry stakeholders where buyers and sellers come together to connect face-to-face and innovative products, services and technologies were revealed.

The two-day free-to-attend exhibition featured over 115 suppliers in an expanded floor plan at the Taurama Aquatic Centre in Port Moresby that included national and international manufacturers and suppliers with the latest innovations in the supply of services and equipment for the industrial, mining and oil & gas sectors.

The exhibition became the premier meeting place to connect and network with industry decision makers across a broad industry reach, including senior management, procurement, government personnel, engineers, contractors, and trade technicians.

The event proved to be the place to meet and engage with suppliers and even find a way into the mining industry. Among the exhibitors included were XCMG PNG, TE PNG, Nasfund, Monier, Biz print, Atlas Steel, Digitec, BSP, PNGAir, Vodafone and one of the major sponsors of the event Boss Attachments.

One exciting feature of the exhibition was the seminar series sponsored by Digitec and aimed at upskilling attendees in areas like technology, smart mining, and safety.

Exhibitors had the opportunity to attend a free How to Do Business in PNG Seminar and gave short presentations across one of two Conference stages on the exhibition floor over the two days.

Boss Attachments General Manager, Ricky Kirby, believes the supplier engagement at industry event will help strengthen relationships. among the Exhibitors.

"We’re proud to lead the way in the Exhibition, the experience we had showcasing our products and services with suppliers only helps to broaden our thinking and innovation perspective. The future in the industry is significant – and the expo helps to increase the visibility of that future," Kirby said.

In an Interview with PNG Business News, Patrick McElligot, Event Organizer and Managing Director of Trans-Tasman Media said: "In the current environment, finding the right people makes all the difference to our workplace, delivering production and getting results – so we’re looking at all avenues to encourage interest from existing and new-to-industry candidates to be part of the event in the coming years."

“The expo provides a much-needed platform for buyers and sellers to connect face to face again at a live, in-person exhibition,” he added.

"Exhibitions in the modern world remain incredibly relevant and their importance cannot be underestimated in their ability to drive the recovery and reconnection of industries, sectors and economies."

"During the course of the event people will connect across industries, hundreds of products will be on display and face-to-face interactions will take place," Mr McElligot said.

With machinery and equipment on display often high-value items, the show offered a platform for buyers to get up close to the products, see the quality, speak to technical experts, and view the live demonstrations. It also offered the opportunity to compare products and brands.

The event was attended by the private, public, and non-governmental sectors over the two days. They were mainly interested in the reviving of the industry after a slow-down during the COVID-19 pandemic. These exhibitors spoke about their services in human resource training, equipment purchasing and hire, and standardised testing for safety and operations.

Many expressed they were happy and satisfied with how the exhibition had progressed and were grateful for Trans-Tasman Media and its major sponsors for having hosted the PNG Industrial & Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference every year in Port Moresby.

The exhibition covered all aspects of the industry, everything from mining, electrical and automation to manufacturing, power and transport. So, there was a lot to see for everyone in those fields.

Community relations and national content, the heart beat of PNG benefits for local communities from any mineral and energy resource development in PNG, is set to take center stage at CANCONEX 2023, PNG’s first ever National Conference and Expo, organized by the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum at PNG University of Technology Lae in August 2023.

It is expected that over 800 delegates will attend, which will include executives from the business sector and a large representation from project area landowners and landowner companies from all of PNG’s major existing or future project developments.

In announcing CANCONEX 2023, the Chamber President Anthony Smarè said it was important the resource sector took the lead in sharing its experiences in this area and for all stakeholders to come together to share learnings and identify opportunities to maximize equitable utilization of community benefits.

“We recognize that Community Affairs and National Content, including aspects such as community engagement, community social responsibility, workforce development, local procurement, and local business development are so important that it deserved its own dedicated conference and expo. CANCONEX 2023 will be PNG’s first largescale industry wide conference and exhibition focused on promoting awareness and engagement on community affairs and national content, to celebrate success stories, and to foster collaborative action to ensure sustainable outcomes for all stakeholders in PNG’s mineral resources and energy sector. I encourage all businesses, landowner companies and landowner groups which have exposure to PNG’s minerals and energy sector to attend and share your experiences”.

The theme for this year’s event will be ‘Promoting National Participation for Sustainable Communities’.

Prime Minister James Marape has been invited to provide the keynote address on the opening day of CANCONEX 2023, to highlight the commitment by the National Government in driving the National Content agenda.

Lae has been selected as the venue for this inaugural event, given the significant progress that have been made by the National Government, the Morobe Provincial Government, local communities, and the developer to advance the nearby Wafi-Golpu project to development.

Major Landowner companies, services providers, and resource project developers will also be exhibiting their offerings across the three days of CANCONEX 2023. A special 40% discount off the registration price is available to landowner representatives from project areas.

Those wishing to participate are encouraged to contact the Chamber on bkorosa@pngchamberminpet.com.pg or proj3@pngchamberminpet.com.pg to secure their participation.

The Chamber looks forward to welcoming Over 800 attendees from government policy makers, business houses, landowner companies as well as large representation from landowner groups from project areas at CANCONEX 2023.”

Returning for its seventh year due to ongoing industry demand, the PNG Industrial and Mining Resources Exhibition and Conference (IMREC) will be held in Port Moresby this June.

Acclaimed for bridging the gap for Papua New Guinea and Australia’s industrial relations, PNG’s IMREC will host respected industry delegates and over 100 exhibitors across two days with a mammoth exhibition event, gala awards dinner and networking conference.

Being held at a new and larger venue, the Taurama Aquatic Centre on 21 and 22 June, some of the biggest names in mining and resources will meet to create valuable business connections, share industry knowledge, and explore the latest in innovative products and services.

Event organiser Patrick McElligott says that PNG’s IMREC has formed an invaluable link between mining and resources companies as well as major Industrial Businesses, working between PNG and Australia, or with aspirations to do so, for almost one decade.

“Year after year this event has demonstrated the importance of nurturing the business relationships between PNG and Australia, and there are now more exciting opportunities than ever before with PNG’s developments in gold mining, oil and gas, and commercial fishing,” Mr McElligott said.

“It’s rewarding to be regarded as a longstanding resource for these businesses as we continue to create further awareness about the possibilities available when each country has the ability to work together.”

This year, the PNG’s IMREC will welcome many repeat exhibitors as well as a collection of exciting new companies. A greater range of Manufactures, suppliers with a range of new products and Services will be exhibiting at the Exhibition this year.

Attendees will hear first-hand from reputable guest speakers including Doctor Frederick Guirguis from WHO Safety Services International to discuss the lost art of cultural safety in the workplace, and representatives from Women in Construction to highlight the importance of diversity in the industry.

PNG’s IMREC will welcome up to 5,000 guests through its doors this June. To secure a stand or for details on tickets, guests are encouraged to act now.

The third EU-PNG business, trade and investment Conference is a demonstration of the European Union’s commitment to strengthen business, trade and investment ties between PNG, member states of the EU-Pacific Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Asia, Pacific region as a whole. This year’s edition attracted more than 700 participants from both the government and private sector in Europe and Papua New Guinea including participants from other Pacific islands countries. The conference held from 11-12 October 2022 at the APEC Haus in Port Moresby, was preceded by a European economic diplomacy week and ended with an international press visit to the provinces.

The business conference was highly valued for its practical approach including the opening speech by the Minister for International Trade Richard Maru who provided an overview of the PNG strategy to further deepen the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The presence of Minister Maru and his vice minister Kessy Sawang who is one of the two women MPs in the National Parliament, showed an unprecedented engagement from the PNG Government and a positive sign for future sustainability of the event which the European Union will cease to fund after next year’s edition.

The French Ambassador to PNG Guillaume Lemoine, Minister for International Trade Richard Maru and vice Minister for International Trade Kessy Sawang were guest speakers at the conference.

The European Union is the main importer of PNG agricultural products with special mention of premium products. In terms of PNG exports in the last 5 years, Europe stands third behind Asia and Oceania. In addition, the EU has committed more than EUR 100 million to support trade related stakeholders and agriculture in key commodities since 2016 and committed more than EUR 37 million regionally under the Pacific Regional and Integration Support (PRISE) Programme. Finally, the most beneficial Free Trade Agreement for Papua New Guinea is with the European Union namely the EPA signed in 2009.

This EPA allows all products from PNG duty free, quota free into the EU market including all tuna processed in PNG even if caught by non-PNG vessels. In the case of fisheries, the EPA has had a significant impact creating more than 12,000 jobs in PNG, mainly for women, and multiplied by 50 the value of PNG fish exports to the EU to over 200 million US dollars.

European Union’s support has targeted key PNG commodities like cocoa, fisheries, vanilla, coconut and kava. The EU further supported upskilling of key stakeholders in business, trade and investment including key PNG departments, agencies and laboratories.

The two-day conference conducted in parallel with a Business Fair including PNG SMEs from different provinces, provided an opportunity for participants to increase their networking prospects and likewise gave small medium enterprises (SMEs) an opportunity not only to display and sell their products but to find a potential market.

The two days discussions and target market analysis presentations generated great interest from participants including those who joined online. The level of participation showed that the interest was not only growing within PNG but in other EPA countries and generally from the Pacific island countries.

The main messages delivered during the conference were: the importance of strengthening trade and investment ties between the EU and PNG through the full utilisation of the Economic Partnership Agreement, skills development, global value chains, regional integration, good governance, social enterprises and corporate social responsibility and the importance of sound regulatory framework.

This two-day conference was completed by the European Economic Diplomacy Week supported by European companies in PNG, the business trade and investment technical workshop, and the press visit to Kokopo in East New Britain and Buka in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville provided an added value to the conference. The complementary events highlighted the EU's commitment to support the development of EU trade and investment in Papua New Guinea as well as promote sustainable economic development in the country.

The EU is already cosying in coordination with local authorities on the scope and organisation of the 4th conference to be held in 2023.

The Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council and the Business Council of Papua New Guinea are pleased to be re-launching the 36th Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum and Trade Expo, which was deferred from 2020 to 24 to 26 May 2021. For the first time ever, this event will be held concurrently in Brisbane (at the Royal International Convention Centre), Port Moresby (at Hilton Port Moresby Hotel) and also online, with a shared speaking program.

The Forum theme for this year is “Reimagining the Future Papua New Guinea”. The theme aims to capture the important message that Australia and Papua New Guinea along with the rest of the world, must move and pivot with the times and circumstances in order to prosper. It also looks to advance discussion about greater diversity in the PNG economy.  Coronavirus and all its related restrictions and issues, along with advancements in technology mean that we must, collectively, think of different ways to work in trade, economy and indeed life. Online connectivity appears to be one of the important forms of communication that will continue for the foreseeable future.

This Forum is distinctly established as the leading annual bilateral business meeting between Australia and Papua New Guinea, and builds on the work both Councils have done over more than three decades in growing the bilateral business relationship.

The program for the Forum includes an overview of the political and economic climate, particularly issues which affect business and investment, and will include specific sessions by expert presenters on topics such as the Covid-19 Pandemic, emerging economic business opportunities in PNG, agribusiness, infrastructure, SME growth, Papua New Guineans in the Australian labour market, and resources.

Key government ministers from Australia and Papua New Guinea, and a range of other expert speakers, have been invited to address the Forum to inform business representatives of policy issues in their portfolio relevant to business, and they will be able to join us from whichever location they are in, whether Brisbane, Port Moresby or elsewhere. Delegates will be able to engage in lively interaction with presenters in most sessions either live in person, or via the online platform with a Q&A feature. Video recordings of presentations will become available online soon after they are given so that delegates may go back and revisit portions they may have missed.

There is something in the program for just about anyone who has an interest in the bilateral business and economic relationship and in the economy of Papua New Guinea.

Delegates will be able to connect via the online platform by sending messages and/or booking appointment times with each other, particularly if they are not attending the Forum at the same venue.

The Forum will again feature a Trade Expo for Australian and Papua New Guinean companies wishing to use the opportunity to match their goods and services to clients and purchasers in each country, and to broaden their business relationship. An innovative development this year is that all the trade booths will be online, with a limited number of physical booths at each location (as well as online) due to Covid restrictions. Booth exhibitors will be able to display their corporate logo, upload documents and short videos for visitors, include links to their own website, and chat one-on-one with delegates online, who can request meeting times with them via the online platform. This is a new, exciting and pioneering way to do things, and we will endeavour to have answers for you immediately should you encounter any problems while using the online platform.

Register early for this conference as in-person spots at each location are limited and demand will be heavy.  To register, complete the online booking process at https://events.apngbc.org.au/event/36APNG/.  Please take care to show where/how you wish to participate. There are many new features that we will be introducing during this Forum as we look to resume regular business to business engagement, which has been so disrupted during the last year. This is a very good value conference.

Enquiries about registration, Trade Expo bookings and accommodation should be directed to the secretariat of the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council, on telephone + 61 7 3348 5142 or by e-mail at info@apngbc.org.au or to the Business Council of Papua New Guinea on telephone + 675 323 8465, fax + 675 323 5162 or by e-mail at admin@bcpng.org.

We look forward to hosting you at the 36th Australia Papua New Guinea Business Forum and Trade Expo on 24-26 May 2021, whether in Brisbane, Port Moresby, or Online.
