More than 350 human resources professionals in Port Moresby have received much-needed financial literacy training through a partnership led by PNGX Group Ltd, Comrade Trustees Services Ltd (CTSL) and the PNG Human Resources Institute (PNGHRI).
The most recent session, held on Friday, 4 July, drew over 220 PNGHRI members from various industries. It followed an earlier workshop attended by 140 participants just three weeks prior.
The initiative is part of PNGX’s wider push to promote financial inclusion, responsible investing and economic empowerment across the country.
The full-day training covered practical financial topics such as saving, budgeting, superannuation, estate planning and investing in the stock market. Delivered in collaboration with CTSL and PNGHRI, the sessions build on the financial literacy programme already being offered to CTSL members of the PNG Defence Force.
Participants were also introduced to the superannuation services offered by CTSL, underscoring the importance of long-term planning and secure retirement strategies.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many said the training not only improved their personal financial skills but also gave them practical tools they could apply in the workplace. Several said they were now confident in introducing financial wellness components into HR policies and staff support programmes.
That shift, they said, could boost employee satisfaction, improve retention and lift productivity — all vital outcomes in a competitive labour market.
The training initiative also aligns with PNGX’s long-term plans to roll out certificate and diploma-level courses for investors, finance professionals and company directors. It’s part of a broader commitment to help more Papua New Guineans access and thrive in the country’s growing investment economy.

PORT MORESBY – The capital city came alive on 28 June as more than 12,000 people gathered at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium for the inaugural Meganesia Concert 2025, a free-entry spectacle that has set the tone for Papua New Guinea’s countdown to its 50th Independence Anniversary.
The stadium pulsed with vibrant colours, festive food and the rhythmic sounds of over 200 performers, including Indigenous Australian and Papua New Guinean artists. The atmosphere was electric, uniting the crowd through music and cultural celebration.
A standout moment of the evening was the electrifying performance by the iconic Australian band Yothu Yindi, which now includes four Papua New Guinean members—a powerful symbol of regional unity. The cultural showcase continued with a traditional Torres Strait Islander dance, known as Zenadth Kes, captivating the crowd with its rich heritage and rhythmic storytelling.
Also gracing the stage were celebrated artists from Australia, including Airileke Ingram, Yirrmal Marika, and Kaiit, who shared the spotlight with some of Papua New Guinea’s finest talents such as Anslom Nakikus, Sprigga Mek, and several other renowned local performers.
The landmark event was delivered in partnership with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC), Amazing Port Moresby, the Australian High Commission, and Gaba Musik, showcasing the spirit of collaboration that made the concert possible.
Prime Minister James Marape, delivering the keynote address, underscored the significance of the event as a symbol of national pride and unity.
“This concert holds immense value as it brings us together to celebrate nearly 50 years of independence,” Marape said, extending gratitude to the organisers, artists, and attendees.
“We will continue these peaceful, colourful, and lively celebrations leading up to Independence Day. I urge everyone to mark your calendars for 15, 16 and 17 September, as we plan the biggest nationwide celebration, honouring our artists, our culture, and our traditional dancers,” he added.
For his part, NCD Governor Powes Parkop lauded the vibrant collaboration between Indigenous artists from Australia and Papua New Guinea, describing the Meganesia Concert as a powerful celebration of shared heritage, identity and collective aspirations.
In his address, Parkop expressed gratitude to the Australian High Commission for its invaluable support in bringing the event to life, and acknowledged the contributions of NCDC, Amazing Port Moresby and Gaba Musik in delivering the successful production.
“On behalf of the city and our organising committee, I thank the Australian Government for this great idea—bringing artists, dancers, and musicians from Australia and PNG to collaborate in one big show,” Parkop said.
Reflecting on Papua New Guinea’s post-independence journey, the governor also recognised the nation's progress and resilience over the past five decades, noting both achievements and the challenges still ahead.
Beyond the music and performances, the Meganesia Concert served as a moment of reflection on the enduring partnership between Papua New Guinea and Australia—a relationship rooted in shared efforts across education, healthcare, disaster response, and development.
The event underscored deep cultural and historical ties between Indigenous Australians and the people of western New Guinea, reinforcing the importance of honouring the past while inspiring the next generation.
Australian High Commissioner to PNG and Special Envoy for the Pacific and Regional Affairs Ewen McDonald echoed Governor Parkop’s remarks, praising the concert’s unity and cultural impact.
“The performances and shared stories at Meganesia set a powerful tone leading up to PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary, energising the packed stadium and paving the way for ongoing cultural exchanges and unity,” McDonald said.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Parkop for his leadership and reaffirmed the strength of the Australia–PNG relationship. McDonald also highlighted standout performances from both countries, including that of Sprigga Mek, winner of the 2019 Pacific Break, as a symbol of regional talent and collaboration.
Continuing the momentum, Parkop announced on 1 July the official launch of ‘The PNG Story’, a nationwide cultural initiative running through to September. It will culminate in a grand celebration of the 50th Independence Anniversary.
The PNG Story is set to spotlight the rich traditions of the country’s four main regions—Southern, New Guinea Islands, Highlands, and Momase—through expressive arts, performances, and storytelling, all unified under the theme: “To celebrate our history and inspire our future.”
The PNG Resources Golden Expo, hosted by the PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy (PNG CORE), will run this July at APEC Haus, and is free and open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Papua New Guineans are invited to explore, learn, and celebrate the vital role of the minerals and energy sector in the nation’s development.
The Golden Expo will be officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso on the evening of Monday, 7 July 2025, at APEC Haus.
This national exhibition will showcase how resource projects—and the Papua New Guineans working on them—have helped shape the country’s economic, social and infrastructure development since independence.
Through historical displays, storytelling and interactive experiences, visitors will trace the journey of the sector from early exploration to the present day, and look ahead to the future.
Some 30 companies and regulatory bodies will exhibit their histories and share how each has contributed in its own way to building Papua New Guinea over the last 50 years. A historical business exhibition of this scale has never been done before.
The Expo will highlight the contributions of landmark projects such as Panguna, Ok Tedi, Misima, Porgera, Kutubu, Lihir, Hidden Valley, Simberi, Kainantu, PNG LNG and others—while also sharing the personal stories of the people and communities behind them.
“This exhibition honours the pioneers, workers, landowners, community leaders, public servants, and companies who have built PNG through the development of PNG’s resource sector,” PNG President Anthony Smaré said. “It’s a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and to inspire future generations to step up to take the industry and PNG further into the future.”
The PNG Resources Golden Expo is free and open to the public for three weeks, and families, schools, and community groups are encouraged to attend. With daily activities such as school visits, interschool debates, and engaging displays, the Expo offers a unique opportunity for all Papua New Guineans to connect with the industry that has helped build the nation.
This month-long celebration begins with the PNG Resources Golden Exhibition, running from 7 to 31 July at APEC Haus. Key events include the Supplier Development Forum (10 July), the Resources Career Fair (17–18 July), Charity Golf Day (25 July), CANCONEX (28–30 July), and the PNG Resources Summit (31 July).
The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how mining and energy projects will continue to shape the country’s future over the next decade and beyond. It offers a window into the past and a door to the future, encouraging communities to envision a prosperous path forward.

Following the success of the first two of four Regional Engagement and Awareness (E&A) sessions in May, Nambawan Super Limited (NSL) held the third E&A session in Kokopo, East New Britain Province.
The third regional E&A session was hosted on Friday, 27 June 2025, at the Gazelle International Hotel. Over 100 members attended the event, including participants who travelled in representing the Autonomous Bougainville Government, Parliamentary Services, West New Britain Provincial Health Authority, and Monle ESR Services, Lihir.
While the annual Employer Conference held in Port Moresby is NSL’s largest stakeholder event, attracting over 400 employer representatives from across the country, NSL understands that the majority of its 235,888 members are located outside the capital city.
“The Regional Engagement & Awareness sessions, therefore, aim to allow members and their employer representatives to ‘stay where they are’ while NSL comes to them,” Paul Sayer, chief executive officer of Nambawan Super Limited, said in a statement.
Sayer said that these events intend to create a platform for NSL to engage directly with employer representatives and members, sharing vital information about the Fund’s performance, the progress of key initiatives, and the outlook for the current year. They also aim to provide an opportunity to hear directly from members and employer representatives—their concerns and challenges—and to answer any questions they may have, fostering deeper support and collaboration between the Fund and its members throughout the country, he added.
At the regional E&A sessions Sayer, together with members of his executive management team, shared the positive results delivered in 2024. Key highlights included the strong growth of the Fund’s net asset value, now at K11.2 billion (USD3.2 billion), making NSL the country’s largest fund in terms of funds under management. NSL’s 2024 record-high net profit after tax of K1.1 billion (USD 297 million) was also shared, including how this translated into a 10.5 per cent interest rate, which was credited to all 235,888 members’ accounts on Monday, 24 March 2025.
Members were informed of other important financial results, such as the K961 million (USD USD 259.47 million) received in member contributions and, more importantly, the K703 million (USD 189.81 million) in benefit payments to members and/or their beneficiaries. Members were reassured that their superannuation savings remained safe, and would be made available to them—together with their employer contributions received by NSL and the interest earned—when they are ready to retire.
Attendees were also updated on several key initiatives delivered in 2024 aimed at improving operational performance and efficiency, investment capabilities, and the quality of customer service and experience provided to members.
Some of these highlights included the official opening of the Moki Business Park located in Port Moresby’s Waigani Business and Government District in June; the successful transition to a new workflow and document management system to help better manage member queries in August; the implementation of an investment management system in November; and finally, the launch of the Nambawan Employer Pay (NEP) Portal in December.
“Our employers will be pleased with the launch of the NEP Portal, which aims to significantly improve data accuracy and operational efficiency by allowing employers to easily update and send member contributions that can then be immediately reconciled by Nambawan Super seamlessly and efficiently, with improved turnaround times and accuracy,” Sayer said.
“This is a great benefit for our members as their contributions are reconciled and receipted into their accounts faster than ever before,” the official added.
Attendees were encouraged to remember that superannuation is a long-term investment, and that while year-to-year results may vary, it is important to maintain a long-term outlook.
Sayer added, “As a profit-to-members fund, protecting and growing our members’ savings is our highest priority and we are proud to have delivered on this promise in 2024.”

The first regional E&A session was held in Goroka on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, at the Bird of Paradise Hotel. Over 100 NSL members from Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Enga, and Southern Highlands provinces attended the event, representing over 79 employer groups.
The second regional E&A session was hosted in Lae on Wednesday, 28 May 2025, at the Lae International Hotel, with 100 members in attendance representing 60 employer groups.
Members present during these sessions took the opportunity to ask questions and raise their concerns directly with the NSL Board of Directors and management, receiving clarification and answers to their queries. Following the events, members expressed their satisfaction, stating that they were very pleased with the results of the Fund in 2024, and excited to now understand the different assets and brands they own throughout PNG through their superfund NSL.
They also acknowledged and thanked NSL for hosting the regional E&A sessions in Kokopo, Goroka and Lae respectively, bringing together members and delivering an extremely informative and educational event.

In an exclusive interview with PNG Business News, TWM Group managing director Kori Chan shared key insights from the 40th Australia–PNG Business Forum and Trade Expo, held from June 23 to 25 at The Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.
Chan described the event as informative and “suitably sized” to encourage meaningful dialogue among business leaders, government representatives and international stakeholders.
“There were great presentations such as that from Kramer Asia Pacific managing director Adam Kramer, who emphasised the importance of local knowledge and experience with global thinking and alignment,” Chan said, noting Kramer’s message about the legacy and regional reach of his family business, which operates across PNG and Australia.
TWM’s involvement culminated on Day 3 with Chan joining a panel discussion on green finance and climate impact funding. His talk traced the company’s 14-year journey in environmental services, rooted in a vision to deliver world-class, environmentally responsible essential services for Papua New Guinea.
“We’ve been guided by a distinct corporate charter to protect our pristine environment, our people and our culture. ESG has been a fundamental part of our growth from the beginning,” Chan said.
He acknowledged clients like ExxonMobil PNG and the PNG LNG Project for helping shape TWM’s adherence to international best practices, including IFC lending requirements and US EPA standards.
TWM presented its Resource Recovery Centre (RRC) as a model for public–private partnership in sustainable waste management. Designed with climate resilience in mind, the facility includes air emissions control, stormwater management, renewable energy systems and biodiversity safeguards.
By diverting waste from landfills and open burning, the RRC reduces greenhouse gas emissions and promotes sustainable resource use by recovering materials otherwise lost to disposal.
Chan highlighted the project’s social and governance dimensions, including policies on gender equality, disability inclusion, employment, human rights and anti-violence.
“We have ensured that the RRC provides defined benefits to the Kuriu landowners — from legitimate land titles to equity participation and employment opportunities,” he said.
“It will also serve as a live educational facility for schools and universities to engage directly with sustainability.”
On governance, TWM integrates risk management, compliance with national and international standards, and transparent reporting. These include anti-corruption and anti-bribery protocols, along with ESG compliance throughout its supply chain.
Chan said the forum allowed TWM to forge meaningful connections with like-minded leaders and government officials, opening doors for future collaboration.
He also used the platform to raise concerns over policy delays. Chief among them is the long-awaited National Waste Management Policy, which has remained in development for over six years.
“It has gone through all the necessary stakeholder consultations with government, private sector and partners, and now requires urgent attention from key policy decision-makers and implementers,” he said.
Asked what policy incentives would best support Papua New Guinea’s green infrastructure sector, Chan laid out a bold wishlist for decision-makers. He proposed the establishment of a special economic zone along the Napa Napa peninsula, offering tax-free incentives to attract investment. He also called for tax and duty breaks for companies that invest in sustainable technologies, along with grants and subsidies to support ESG-focused research and development.
Chan urged the government to enforce green procurement policies across all levels and require public reporting of ESG performance by government agencies. He also recommended introducing regulations that reward both emissions reductions and job creation, increasing the use of public–private partnerships to secure investment, and ensuring that government regulators apply compliance measures fairly.
Finally, he stressed the importance of upholding responsible and transparent procurement practices in all public sector engagements to build trust and drive long-term environmental and economic benefits.
During the discussion, an audience member raised the potential of PNG’s growing diaspora, particularly in Australia, to contribute to national development.
Chan replied, “More can be done to strengthen the ties between PNG and Australia, including with our PNG diaspora based overseas. They have the ability to drive positive change in the country and PNG must find ways to entice them to return, invest and bring with them their knowledge and experience.”
His call for PNG to transition from a linear to a circular economy resonated with the broader sustainability discussions throughout the forum. “It is the way of the future. It is morally right if we are to act sustainably,” he said.
The 40th Australia–PNG Business Forum and Trade Expo showcased diverse voices and visions, but TWM’s message was clear: with the right policies and partnerships, green infrastructure can become a cornerstone of PNG’s sustainable future.

Each category winner will receive a K5,000 grant and participate in a year-long mentorship programme led by Westpac, designed to strengthen leadership skills and expand professional networks.
The judging process is now underway, with winners to be announced at the highly anticipated WOW Awards Gala in July 2025.

Papua New Guinea and Australia marked four decades of business partnership at the 40th Australia–PNG Business Forum and Trade Expo, held from 23 to 25 June at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.
The forum came at a key moment for PNG, which is preparing to celebrate 50 years of independence. More than 800 delegates from government, business and development sectors attended, discussing how the partnership can evolve in a world shaped by technology, climate challenges and shifting global markets.
With the theme “Securing the Future of Investments, ‘Stori Bilong Yumi’: From Shells to Artificial Intelligence,” the event looked at the journey of PNG–Australia ties and the road ahead.
Business Council of PNG President Susil Nelson-Kongoi opened the forum by reflecting on unity and shared purpose. Using PNG’s national bird as a metaphor, she said, “In order for the Kumul to display elegance, vitality and strength, like all birds, the strength of its wings must prevail.”
She warned against division and called for stronger collaboration. “Where there is no partnership, the tribe divides,” she said, adding that lasting development depends on working together.
Nelson-Kongoi highlighted the growing PNG diaspora in Australia, now over 100,000 people, calling them “vital bilateral builders” who are already contributing to trade, tourism, logistics and tech. She praised the launch of the Coral Sea Dialogue as a way to include diaspora voices in shaping future policies.
She also raised security as a growing concern, calling for improved cyber defences, youth-focused jobs programmes and the creation of a Copyright and Cultural Rights Commission. “Markets must be protected if they are to prosper,” she said.
Rugby league, too, featured heavily in her speech. She described PNG’s push for an NRL franchise not just as a sporting move but as a national development project. With over $300 million planned investment, it will support city planning, infrastructure, public transport and national identity. “Perhaps the most important part of the NRL initiative will inspire other sporting codes to initiate similar partnerships,” she said.
Across three days, sessions covered farming, value-adding industries, infrastructure, climate finance and digital disruption. Speakers from Trukai, Helping Hand Honey, the Australian High Commission and local tech firms shared how rural innovation and responsible use of AI could drive inclusive growth.
One highlight was the Stan Joyce Jersey Session, where Australian Minister for the Pacific Pat Conroy joined NRL Bid CEO Andrew Hill, former NRL player David Mead and Gulf Isou CEO Carolyn Mom to talk about sport as a tool for unity, health and jobs.
The final day focused on PNG’s resources sector. Executives from Ok Tedi, Kumul Petroleum, Santos PNG and TotalEnergies shared updates on major projects and stressed the need for clear policies and consistent regulation to attract long-term investment.
Australia PNG Business Council President Vaughan Mills closed the forum by reaffirming both countries’ commitment to a future based on mutual growth and respect.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has called for sweeping reforms, deeper cooperation, and renewed unity among Melanesian countries.
Addressing the 23rd Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Leaders’ Summit on Monday, 23 June, in Suva, Fiji, Prime Minister Marape urged MSG member states to reinforce their solidarity by recognising their ancient ties, cultural kinship and shared destiny.
Speaking under the theme “Shaping a Stronger, Resilient Melanesia for a United Pacific Future,” PM Marape reminded delegates that the peoples of Melanesia—from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, and Fiji, to parts of Polynesia and beyond—have coexisted in this region for thousands of years.
The prime minister, in wide-ranging and resolute address, also reflected on PNG’s 50 years of independence and presented a forward-looking vision for a strengthened MSG.
“It is a deeply significant milestone – one that invites national reflection and regional recommitment,” Marape said. “PNG has never walked the journey of nation-building alone. We are Melanesians first, by language, culture, ancestry, and geography.”
Marape described the MSG as the anchor of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), especially during times of regional uncertainty, as he urged member states to uphold the MSG’s unique identity while complementing broader Pacific mechanisms.

Marape highlighted the shifting global landscape and the mounting challenges confronting Melanesia, including climate change, fragile economies, border insecurity, and growing inequality.
He urged collective leadership over fragmented efforts, warning that “this is not a time for siloed thinking.”
Referring to the Pacific Islands Forum Eminent Persons Group Talanoa Consultations held the previous evening, he stressed the need to restructure and streamline regional institutions such as the MSG and PIF to ensure they remain effective and relevant.
Support for West Papua
On the sensitive issue of West Papua, PM Marape reaffirmed PNG’s support. He praised the dialogue and openness under the leadership of Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Chair of the MSG.
He confirmed that dialogue with Indonesia is already underway at the leaders’ level under a PIF mandate, referencing a 2023 meeting in San Francisco with the former Indonesian President and PM Rabuka.
Marape urged MSG members to fully support the current PIF-endorsed dialogue process, emphasising respect for sovereignty and constructive engagement. He also welcomed Indonesia’s continued participation in MSG discussions, clarifying that engagement does not infringe on sovereignty but highlights MSG’s responsibility to uphold Melanesian cultural and land rights.
Reaffirming PNG’s support for New Caledonia, Marape expressed solidarity with the Kanak people and the FLNKS movement. “The right to self-determination is enshrined in international law and must be respected,” he said, calling for continued support from the United Nations and other multilateral forums to ensure peaceful and inclusive political dialogue.
He also confirmed that formal letters expressing unified MSG positions on New Caledonia and West Papua would be sent to the respective governments in Paris and Jakarta.
Institutional reform and MSG membership
Marape has expressed strong opposition to the recommendation to outsource the appointment of the MSG Secretariat’s Director General to an independent consultant, pointing to the Revised MSG Agreement of 2015, which outlines a clear internal process.
“To outsource this decision would be to deviate from our own constitution,” he warned, commending the consensus reached on adopting a transparent, merit-based, and rotational system for future appointment.
He further supported reviewing MSG membership guidelines to establish clear, consistent standards for full, associate, and observer status, avoiding political sensitivities and confusion.
The current MSG membership framework is “too vague,” Marape said, urging the Secretariat to present revised guidelines at the next Senior Officials Meeting.
Trade, connectivity and regional development
While PNG has yet to sign the MSG Free Trade Agreement (MSGFTA) due to technical alignment with WTO schedules, Marape reaffirmed the country’s commitment to finalising the process.
“We see the MSGFTA as critical to building our economic resilience and unlocking intra-Melanesian trade potential, particularly in agriculture, fisheries, labour mobility, and value-added products,” he stated.
He also announced PNG’s plan to open its northern land border at Wutung, allowing direct overland travel into Indonesia via Jayapura. “This complements existing air links and reflects PNG’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity, mobility, and trade in our shared border zone,” he said.
Marape also confirmed PNG will host the next MSG Prime Ministers’ Cup, calling sports “a unifying force” and inviting all MSG members to participate in celebrating Melanesian identity through football.
Calling climate change “the defining crisis of our time,” Marape expressed full support for Vanuatu’s initiative to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on states’ climate obligations.
“We are committed to building a climate-resilient Melanesia that values our natural ecosystems and protects the rights of customary landowners,” he said, reaffirming belief in carbon markets with integrity, equitable benefit-sharing, and community-driven climate solutions.

The Walk Against Corruption is one of PNG’s most visible civic movements, bringing together citizens, civil society, and the private sector to stand united against corruption in all its forms.
