The MAPEX Training Institute (MTI), a 100% nationally owned and privately registered higher education provider, has announced an ambitious five-year plan to transition into Papua New Guinea’s first nationally owned private university.
In an exclusive interview with PNG Business News during MTI’s 20th anniversary celebration on 16 July, MTI Chairman Dr. Solomon Awili outlined the vision for the institution’s future and issued a public appeal for government, industry and community support to help realise this transformation.
“In the next five years, we want to convert this institution into a private, nationally owned university,” Dr. Awili said.
“That is why, on behalf of the board of directors, I am appealing to the government, private industry players and the public to support MAPEX in whatever fundraising efforts we undertake,” he added.
Dr Awili said the institute continues to play a vital role in national development by creating over 100 jobs and fulfilling its tax obligations as a corporate entity, despite economic headwinds.
“If we are serious about taking back PNG—and that is the mantra of the current government—then this is the way to do it,” he said.
“Support MAPEX through our technical and vocational education programmes that empower Papua New Guineans not just for domestic employment but also for overseas opportunities, including work placements in Australia,” he added.
Dr Awili noted that MAPEX training programmes have received recognition and support from the Australian Defence Force (ADF), which works in partnership with the PNG Defence Force to promote lifelong skills development.
“If the Australian Government and ADF recognise MAPEX, then we are confident in our ability to continue delivering competency-based training to our people,” he said. “This is a national call to action—for everyone to contribute where they can.”

20th Anniversary and Leadership Recognition
The 20th anniversary celebration brought together MAPEX staff, students, board members, business partners and families to mark the milestone. The event coincided with the birthday of MAPEX Chief Executive Officer, Mr Marcus Palem Kara, who turned 46 on the day.
“I thank our hardworking staff, management and board for their continued commitment and dedication to ensuring the smooth operation of MAPEX Training Institute,” Mr Kara said. “We’ve come a long way—and with your support, we can go even further.”
The institution aims to redefine higher education in Papua New Guinea by establishing a university born from local vision, sustained effort and collective backing from the community and nation.
