MRDC strengthens directors' governance skills through PNGID training

The Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC) has strengthened the governance capabilities of its trust company directors and senior executives through a two-day directors' training programme delivered by the PNG Institute of Directors (PNGID).

About 45 participants, including directors from MRDC trust companies and senior staff from MRDC and its affiliated investment companies, attended the programme, which was held in two batches from July 20 to 21.

The training forms part of MRDC's continuing effort to improve corporate governance standards across the group by equipping directors with a stronger understanding of governance principles, legal and fiduciary responsibilities, compliance requirements, ethical leadership and board effectiveness.

The programme was delivered under the PNGID Directors Development Programme and supports ongoing discussions to formalise a memorandum of agreement between MRDC and PNGID.

Under the proposed agreement, PNGID will provide facilitators and customised training programmes for landowner-based directors, emerging directors and professional directors within the MRDC group.

Participants received certificates of participation upon completing the programme and were offered the opportunity to become members of the PNG Institute of Directors.

MRDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Augustine Mano said the company remained committed to investing in director development to strengthen governance across its operations.

"We look forward to engaging PNGID to facilitate more trainings to deliver tailored directors' training on corporate governance, compliance, and directors' duties and responsibilities for our directors within our group," Mano said.

MRDC said strengthening governance capabilities remains a key priority as it manages resource-derived investments on behalf of Papua New Guinea landowners and other stakeholders.
