Wafi-Golpu Mine Scales Down Operations
The WAFI-GOLPU Joint Venture has deferred its planned work program that it had wanted to commence this calendar year.
Newcrest managing director Sandeep Biswas said in the company’s September third quarterly report that general operation of the site, community programs and environmental monitoring activity will all continue, although at a reduced scale.
Bisawas said the project team in Brisbane and site has been reduced in order to reflect the revised work program.
He said this came as a result of the continued delay due to unresolved legal proceedings between the national government and the Morobe provincial government with regards to the internal distribution of PNG’s economic interests in the project.
Meanwhile he said there is also an ongoing review by the PNG Government of policies relevant to the mining industry.
He said the PNG Government continues to signal its support for the project and the WGJV is well placed to resume discussions with the PNG Government given the constructive progress already made on the various agreements required for completion of the permitting process and the grant of a Special Mining Lease.
“It is difficult to estimate the duration of this delay and the market will be advised when discussions recommence,” he added.
