Ramu Nico Insists It Only Exports MHP And Chromite
Ramu NiCo Management (MCC) Limited has issued a statement that it was granted permit by the National Government to export mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) and chromite from the Kurumbukari mine in Madang province.
Chromite is the by-product of nickel/cobalt extraction and transported by road from Kurumbukari Mine to Lae port for export.
The company clarified that mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) is a compound of nickel and cobalt after it is processed and packaged at the company’s Basamuk processing plant in Rai Coast. And Ramu NiCo has denied allegations by Madang provincial government (MPG) during a media conference earlier last week that it is extracting and exporting overseas gold, chromite and lime.
The Company said that MPG has conveyed misleading information to the general public using the media continuously without getting facts correct. According to the company, limestone is extracted from the limestone quarry near Basamuk Bay and is used specifically at the Basamuk processing plant to collect lime to neutralize tailings and remove the iron and aluminum elements from the tailings before it is discharged using the Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP) system.
With regards to chromite, Ramu NiCo again clarified that chromite is a by-product which comes out of the raw ore when separation takes place at its Kurumbukari Mine Beneficiation Plant. Chromite is extracted and stock-piled because it is an abrasion matter that can abrade the slurry pipeline when transporting slurry down to its Basamuk processing plant in Rai Coast.
“The company would like to set the record straight that chromite is not economical in its business; however, Ramu NiCo had decided to provide business opportunities for its local landowners of Kurumbukari,” “Most of the profit made from chromite export is given back to the landowner companies through business opportunities provided for the transportation of chromite to Lae,” the Company management said.
The company stated that it holds the export license and transportation permit of the chromite products. The chromite product is transported to Lae and not Madang for export due to bad road condition between Usino Junction in Usino-Bundi and Madang.
