Pruaitch thanks UAE for generous sponsorship
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Hon. Patrick Pruaitch, has thanked the United Arab Emirates Government for its generous sponsorship of Papua New Guinea’s participation in Dubai Expo2020, which commences in October next year.
He conveyed the PNG Governments thanks during a meeting with the UAE Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Sultan Al Shamsi, on November 30 (Saturday) at the Expo2020 International Participants’ Meeting in Dubai.
Mr. Pruaitch said PNG’s Expo2020 participation was made possible by the generous offer of the UAE Government to fund the construction and fit out of the PNG pavilion, and to provide two apartments free of charge for PNG delegates to use during the six months duration of Expo2020. The UAE Expo2020 team will also pay for cleaning and maintenance costs.
Expo2020, dubbed “The World’s Greatest Show”, takes place in Dubai from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021. It will be attended by millions of people and over 200 countries, most of whom are building their own multi-million-dollar pavilions. Seventy countries have completed ground-breaking ceremonies.
Organizers said the event will provide participating nations with opportunities for “Nation Branding”, “Tourism Promotion” and “Promotion of Foreign Direct Investment” on a theme of “Global Opportunities to Guide Our Future Together”.
The two Ministers noted that Dubai Expo is different from previous World Expos’ because of a clear focus on economic growth, including mobility, sustainability and innovation in trade, tourism and global investment flows.
Mr. Pruaitch congratulated HE Sultan Al Shamsi for the excellent preparations for hosting of Expo2020 and assured him the PNG Government would make full use of Expo2020 opportunities as part of the Expo theme, “Global Plan of Action to Secure Peace and Prosperity”.
He advised the UAE Government PNG would soon appoint a permanent Commissioner General for Expo2020, a task currently carried out in an acting capacity by PNG’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Ambassador Joshua Kalinoe.
Minister Pruaitch is in Dubai to attend the Expo2020 International Participants Meeting before travelling to Nairobi, Kenya to Chair the European Union-Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Council of Minister’s Meeting and the ACP Leader’s summit.
On bilateral matters, Minister Pruaitch congratulated Vice Minister Hon. Al Shamsi for the fast action taken by the UAE Government to enter into formal diplomatic relations with PNG following the signing of relevant documents.
Mr. Pruaitch told the UAE Vice Minster he had a good exchange on bilateral issues with the UAE Ambassador to PNG, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Omar A. Balfaqeeh, during a transit stopover in Singapore.
In welcoming Minister Pruaitch to the UAE, Vice Minister Al Shamsi said the UAE Government would assist PNG to profile its development potential and to connect PNG to the rest of the world through Expo2020.
Vice Minister Al Shamsi said that the UAE is well position geographically and infrastructure wise to bring the world together during Expo2020 as it is located centrally between the East (Asia/Pacific/South America) and the West (Europe/North America/Africa).
Minister Pruaitch stated that since he is also PNG’s Minister for International Trade, he welcomes bilateral cooperation in promotion of bilateral and multilateral trade.
He told Vice Minister Al Shamsi that on his return to PNG he would look into outstanding plans for conclusion of a Double Taxation Treaty, Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement and an Air Services Agreement, as immediate initiatives to facilitate trade and investment between the UAE and PNG.
Vice Minister Al Shamsi agreed that these three agreements are important for the private sector of both countries to conduct business for mutual benefit and his Government looked forward to their finalization and conclusion.
