Position Paper On Porgera To Be Done Soon: Minister
A position paper on Porgera will soon be done says Mining Minister Johnson Tuke. This position paper will outline landowner, state and provincial expectations to developer before their mining lease is reviewed.
This came after a ministerial delegation together with Prime Minister James Marape visited Enga Province last week.
Mr Tuke said following the expiration of the mining lease in August last year, his department is conducting an exclusive undertaking of understanding the Acts and where policies are as far as mining is concerned.
He said during the visit he also had the courtesy to meet the 24 agents representing the legitimate landowners after receiving their position papers in Port Moresby.
“Me being in Porgera was for me to understand and diagnosed who I am dealing with and that gave me an upper hand of who I should deal with because many are times there are people bombarding me at my office claiming to be imminent landowners,” he said.
“For me, I have now identified the landowners so that I can be able to mitigate and make sure that I follow the guidelines and deliberate on this.
“It is up to the government and I will do a position paper very shortly, I will take it to the government to NEC and NEC will assist in the decision making on the status of Porgera extension.”
He said with regards to the timeline of the Porgera Special Mining Lease, a technical team from his ministry is conducting an assessment close to seven months therefore he would like to come up with a decision on the first quarter of this year.
“I can’t waste more time on it, last year we were not really prepared but going forward my undertaking is by the first quarter of this year we should come up with a decision and in few weeks time I should take a position paper to the government,” he said.
“In a way, the mine can operate but on a fair deal, it is a mine that has history and there are some surrounding legacy issues which we know thereof. But the denominator is we want a fair deal and that is what I want to echo and stretch.”
