PNG Is A Major Player In The Tuna Industry Worldwide
Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources Dr Lino Tom is looking forward to the 16th Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission forum (WCPFC) that will be held on December 5-11 at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby.
“As custodians of our land and resources, this is an important forum that seeks to establish rules and regulations that conserves and preserves natural resources especially the Marine resources and PNG is proud to be part of the 16th WCPFC forum,” Dr Tom said.
He said Papua New Guinea is an important player in the Pacific region in regards to the management and conservation of highly migratory fish stocks, especially tuna as PNG supports the largest tuna industry in the world.
Dr Tom said PNG has also contributed towards the promotion and development of the adoption of the regional movement in the Pacific for sustainable fisheries. “As a responsible government and a major player in the Pacific, it is our duty to make sure we protect and conserve our natural resources especially our marine resources,” Dr Tom said.
And he said on-behalf of the government of PNG he welcomes each and everyone who will be attending and participating in the WCPFC forum here in PNG as we seek to find better means of preserving our marine resources so we can also find ways to get much out from this industry.
