Newcrest Suspends FIFO Flights From Australia

Newcrest has suspended its fly in fly out (FIFO) flight operations from Australia into Lihir effective this week.

The mine said the outgoing flights however will remain in place.

This is an additional contribution by the company to global and national efforts to impede the spread of COVID-19 transmission.

“Our management team at Lihir – expatriate and Papua New Guinean – is largely residential, and the vast proportion of our overall workforce at Lihir is Papua New Guinean including local Lihirians.

This team, under the leadership of our resident General Manager, will continue to operate the mine safely and with proper observance of health protocols,” the company said.

Newcrest said the suspension is being implemented in an orderly way while it works to ensure the residential and broader community at Lihir is properly staffed and supported from a health and safety perspective over the coming period.

This move will also bring Lihir operations in line with Australian and PNG government requirements, including the Australian Government’s advice to Australians not to travel overseas until further notice.

Our health provider at the Lihir Medical Centre will continue to manage any prospective cases according to our COVID-19 Management Protocols,” the mine company said.

Ok Tedi Mining also released a statement on Wednesday, while updating its suspected cases relayed all international travellers scheduled to return to Tabubil have been cancelled.

Meanwhile, Harmony through its Hidden Valley Mine will continue to apply its preventative protocols, and the employee referred to recently being negative to Covid-19 will remain in isolated quarantine and undergo further testing for such further period as the health authorities require.

“Further to reports in the media today (yesterday) concerning the status of a suspected “probable case” in Morobe Province, Harmony is pleased to confirm that the most recent test results returned in respect of that person are negative for Covid-19,” it stated.

On the issue of FIFO, it is understood that an announcement may be made by the ministry of mining in light of the risks exposed to overseas travelers within the industry. Continue reading at https://postcourier.com.pg/newcrest-suspends-fifo-flights-from-australia/ | Post Courier
