Newcrest Board Of Directors Visit Deepens Relations With PNG
Peter Hay, chairman of Newcrest Mining, has hailed the company’s close ties to PNG during a visit by Newcrest’s Board of Directors to the country. Following site visits to Lihir and Wafi-Golpu, the Board noted the strong contribution Newcrest makes to PNG and its people.
Since 2010, Newcrest has invested more than K7 billion in capital investment on Lihir, and in financial year 2019 bought K800 million worth of goods and services from PNG suppliers and paid K230 million in salaries and wages to employees. Craig Jones, Newcrest’s recently appointed chief operating officer for PNG, who accompanied the board on their visit to Lihir reinforced Newcrest’s commitment to PNG.
“Newcrest helps build local communities through infrastructure development, teacher training, and community health programs,” he said. The company’s investment in its local communities in the 2019 financial year totaled K82 million.
Mr Jones said the mining sector continues to have an important role to play in PNG’s development.
“Newcrest and its partners in the mining industry have a unique capability to help the government achieve its development goals in remote and difficult to access areas,” Mr Jones said.
“We look forward to working with the government to grow our business, including through unlocking the Wafi-Golpu project in Morobe Province.”
