New Team To Probe Basamuk Slurry Spill
A new government-sanctioned investigations team will travel to Madang next week to formally investigate the spillage at Basamuk and the dead fish along the Madang Coast.
This was revealed by Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change Wera Mori during a news conference held in Port Moresby yesterday.
Mr Mori, while responding to the public outcry over the Basamuk spillage and the dead fish found days after the spillage in Madang, said that an investigations team approved by the cabinet would perform several tests on various samples to prove if the dead fish were linked to the spillage or not and put the issue at rest.
“The Government will put together a formal investigation team to actually go and take samples that will really establish where that heavy metal that was found in the fish in Madang was from.”
Mr Mori said that a few days after the spillage at Basamuk Bay, some dead fish appeared on the doorsteps of Madang and there had been an outcry to link the dead fish to the spillage at Basamuk. However, he said that what needed to happen was how to connect the dead fish to the spillage?
He said the team would collect samples from the spillage area, the tailings, the processing plant, from the slurry before they entered the processing plant for processing, as well as from the stock pile of lateritic ore at the Kurumbukari mine and the bedrock and the fish.
“We will also sample the fish that are being caught and rejected at RD Tuna,” said Mr Mori.
“We will also ask National Fisheries to catch fish and we will also test the tissues of the fish from the first 10 kilometers out of Basamuk then the next 30 kilometers in Madang.”
He said they want to do all the killings in one go to put the matter to rest. “We will put all things beyond doubt when the formal team sanctioned by the government, based on the research and investigation they get, this will be the official position of the State.”
