Mining Companies Important To PNG’s Economy: Kramer
Mining companies still in operation are critical for Papua New Guinea’s economy at present.
Police Minister and Member for Madang Open, Bryan Kramer says should Covid-19 hit us severely, we stand to face severe repercussions.
Speaking at the Covid-19 media update briefing last week, Mr Kramer highlighted that “we stand to lose out greatly on foreign currency earnings for the country among other socio-economic benefits.”
Mr Kramer, stated that government would deliberate on the field break-system of foreign employees with mining, oil and gas companies.
“Foreign workers working with mining companies are now flying out for break only and will not return until the Covid-19 epidemic is cleared,”.
“If they want to return then they must go through the normal quarantine check for 14 days and if cleared then will be allowed back into the country,”.
Mr Kramer said national staff are currently on 14 days work and 7 days break shift. We understand their respective companies ensure they go to their respective homes for field break.
He maintained government’s recognizing the importance of the industry and its continued operation to keep the economy going during the tough period.
It is understood many mining, oil and gas companies in the country have complied with the governments direction and advised their employees who are on field break not to return until further notice and those who are currently at work remain in the country.
