Meet focuses on tuna management
THE National Fisheries Authority (NFA) in partnership with INFOFISH will co-host the 7th Regional Tuna Industry and Trade conference on Sept 12-13 in Port Moresby.
NFA managing director John Kasu said the event would focus on tuna management and development topics in the Pacific, markets and trade barriers, research and development of new tuna products and prospects for broadening the tuna investment based in the region.
The Western and Central Pacific Ocean contributes almost 60 per cent of the global harvest of tuna stock, making the Pacific the heart of the tuna industry.
The biannual Pacific Tuna Forum is the platform for stakeholders to keep abreast of the latest management and sustainability initiatives and to be informed of investment opportunities in the region.
Kasu said the conference was in collaboration with GLOBEFISH-FAO and the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, Secretariat to the Pacific Community and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, Parties to the Nauru Agreement, the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association, PNG Fishing Industry Association and the Fiji Tuna Industry Association.
