Meet Discusses Ways To Upgrade Wau-Lae Road
A special Lae Chamber of Commerce meeting was held at the Lae International last month (Aug 22), to discuss the continually deteriorating state of the Wau to Lae Highway.
Present at the meeting were representatives of the Bulolo Chamber of Commerce (BCOC), Department of Works (DOW), Transport Sector Support Program (TSSP) and key stakeholders adversely affected by the disastrous road conditions, including Hidden Valley Mining, Zenag, NKW and PNG Forest Products.
At the meeting a letter was presented to the DOW and the TSSP from the BCOC, outlining the negative impact of the road conditions on the private sector businesses and numerous local and indigenous groups that rely on the Wau to Lae corridor as a lifeline for their livelihood.
To emphasise the importance of this highway, some relative facts on annual impact were reported. A number of initiatives to provide an effective long-term solution to the road problem were proposed in the letter, including the establishment of a joint Wau-to-Lae Road Advisory group.
This group would be comprised of key road-user representatives, along with representatives from the DOW and local Chambers of Commerce. A strategy was put in place to support the DOW by providing much needed revenue to facilitate the highway repairs and maintenance, on an on-going basis.
The response from the DOW is yet to be announced, but considering the difficult conditions and financial constraints the DOW labours under every day, it seems likely that they would be taking this proposal very seriously; a proposal that not only supports the the department in their endeavours, but that benefits the entire community.
