Kua To Present 10 Legislative Amendments
Mining and Petroleum Minister Kerenga Kua will present 10 legislative amendments on the floor of Parliament when it resumes today.
In his address during the re-commissioning of Puma Energy’s Napa Napa refinery in Central province, Mr Kua said he anticipates introducing 10 legislative amendments in Parliament tomorrow (today).
He said PNG is in a very interesting phase in its development in the oil and gas sectors. “We have already commissioned the PNG LNG project which has been in production for five going six years now.
We have just completed the Papua Gas agreement and facilitated for it to proceed,” he said. “And tomorrow in Parliament, I anticipate introducing and presenting 10 legislative amendments that will facilitate for and enable that big project to proceed to supply oil and gas to the international market,” said Mr Kua.
He said very shortly the government hopes to introduce other projects of varying scopes as well to come on stream and continue the process of production of energy in the country to feed the apatite of industrialise nations as well as supply the domestic energy needs.
“While I have the opportunity here, let me say this; In the Papua Gas agreement there is provision for about 5 per cent of the production to be made available for domestic use here in this country,” he said.
“That is the provision been made but whether that is enough to fuel all our domestic needs I have no idea and as to how we will deploy that 5 per cent when it is actually curved out it needs a lot of work to be done.” “And I think that’s where Puma (Energy) can also play a role; we needed to have a conversation.
My department and your company- we need to have a conversation about what role you can play when it comes to us deploying that 5 percent to the use of this country. “That is because you have the facility network, you have the refining facility and all the stars are probably aligned in your company,” Kua said.
