Govt targets Highlands for cocoa
The national government is looking at identifying fertile land to produce more than two million cocoa seedlings in the highlands region, and Jiwaka has the potential.
National Planning Minister Richard Maru made this remark during his visit to the province over a week ago.
Former government minister and member for North Waghi Dr Fabian Pok took Mr Maru on a tour and visited a possible site near Fatima Catholic Parish, said that Jiwaka had fertile land for agriculture.
Mr Maru said cocoa is one of the important crop and Highlands would become frontier for cocoa.
He said Jiwaka Province had the potential and the government would build cocoa factory somewhere around Banz area for the highlands region.
Dr Pok said the reality was cocoa can grow in the highlands region and North Waghi was willing to setup the cocoa factory.
He thanked Mr Maru for possibly choosing North Waghi because all the facilities would be at the district.
At the announcing of the possible Kup international airport last week Jimi MP and Community Development Minister Wake Goi said the government intention to setup cocoa factory for two million seedlings was welcoming news for the people of Jiwaka and the highlands region as a whole.
