Geologist Hopes To Inspire Others
KUMUL Petroleum Holding Limited geologist Elliona Maso, pictured, achieved her condensed Master of Petroleum and Geoscience degree during a seven month stay in Spain.
“The degree was sponsored by Repsol and took place at their dedicated learning facility in Madrid.
“My employer Kumul Petroleum encouraged me to grab the opportunity and supported me with my usual salary as well as an allowance,” Ms Maso said.
Managing Director of KPHL, Wapu Sonk, pointed out the company’s keenness to support local talent. “Elliona has worked for us for the past four years and has turned out to be a very competent and dedicated geologist,” Mr Sonk said.
“Our vision is to empower the people of PNG and education is one of the cornerstones. “Sending Elliona and other promising young people overseas is a fantastic investment for Kumul Petroleum and for the country.”
Elliona loved living overseas. “It was an amazing experience that I’m very grateful for,” she said. “Professionally the level was outstanding. The other students came from all corners of the world – the US, Canada, Venezuela, Brazil, Angola, Malaysia, Libya – and their work ethics and professional standards were very high. It was seven months of intense learning.
“Socially I learnt a lot as well. Everybody was outside their comfort zone, which is a really good place to be if you want to understand other cultures.
“During the weekends I often explored the city with some of the other students. The lights, the food and the lifestyle were amazing. “Before this, my only overseas trip was a one week training course in Japan – also initiated by Kumul Petroleum – so I have literally expanded my horizons.” She said now back at home she has realised how much her confidence has grown.
“Back at work I soon realised how much I had learnt in Spain. My competence and confidence have sky-rocketed, I’m completing tasks I wouldn’t even have attempted before I left.
“At a team level I can now participate at a higher level and add more value to the decision making process,” she said.
