Finschhafen Roads Upgrade Underway
FINSCHHAFEN has begun upgrading of roads and telecommunication infrastructure in the district as of last week.
Construction work is headed by the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) engineering battalion of Igam Barracks in Lae and the Department of Works (DoW) while all telecommunication services are carried out by various state own entities (SOEs).
MP for Finschhafen and Minister for Communication and Energy Renbo Paita said Finschhafen has been severely hit by disaster due to continuous rain which most sections of the roads in the district were affected.
Mr Paita said most sections of the roads were damaged causing difficulty for transportation services. He however thanked the PNGDF and DoW for their quick response and deployment to Finschhafen to upgrade the roads and restore services.
Work has already begun from Mape bridge and will soon cover all affected areas and feeders roads to allow smooth flow of public access to transportation services in areas of Kote and Hube LLG into Gagidu station.
Mr Paita said apart from the road constructions, there is also an urgent need for major upgrade of telecommunication infrastructure in the district.
He said the communication services have been down for some time and as the minister responsible, he is now starting a communication development project rollout starting with Finschhafen and will eventually move throughout the country.
Engineers from various SOEs from EMTV, National Broadcasting Corporation, Bmobile, Telikom PNG, PNG Power, FM Radio Services and Dataco PNG were in Finschhafen last week to carry out the first communication development survey.
The team after surveying facilities in Gagidu and Logaweng visited Sattleberg in which they had to walk another four kilometres to inspect a major terrestrial radio repeater linking Logaweng in Finschhafen, Weduru in Labuta and Siassi in Tewai-Siassi districts and Mt Lunaman in Lae.
Mr Paita said the purpose of upgrading communication services in the district is to make sure people have access to EMTV, NBC, Telikom and Bmobile communication services, FM radio services including internet for online services in the district.
He said Finschhafen district will also become a technology zone in the province and country following the national government’s national economical zone strategic plan for the future. “This is a huge benefit for my district and people as a way forward and as minister responsible I will make sure these services are delivered,” he said.
‘‘Any business organisation, companies, service providers or investors under information communications technology sector that are planning to establish in Finschhafen will be tax-free.’’
He said once Finschhafen district is covered then all other districts in the province and throughout the country will also fall in line.
