Eastern Highlands Targets Rice Industry Set-Up
Eastern Highlands Province is on a mission to establish a rice industry through the use of Chinese agricultural innovations- Juncao and Upland Rice Technology.
Provincial Governor Peter Numu made these remarks recently during a visit by delegates from the Fujian province of China headed by Fujian vice-governor Ms Guo Lingling.
“Rice is obviously the most eaten food in many homes in the country, yet we lack rice industries,” Mr Numu said. “I believe Eastern Highlands can set the benchmark by establishing a rice industry which will happen through the sister provincial ties with the Fujian province of China.”
Inventor of Juncao and Upland Rice Technology Professor Lin Zhanxi has no doubt that Eastern Highlands can establish a rice industry in the next five years. Juncao Technology senior agronomist Lin Yingxiing also agreed with the professor saying they are very close and is certain that when the time comes, the economy of Eastern Highlands will transform.
“I think we are not that far to achieving this milestone, from my professional opinion, in the next three years, Eastern Highlands will establish its own rice industry,” he said.
“Right now we have to do more capacity building and train more farmers before we start up the rice industry. “Last year we (Juncao Technology) gave 2 tonnes of seedlings to farmers and encouraged them to plant and we are frequently monitoring these farmers.”
Governor Numu said he wants rice, mushroom, and coffee to transform his province and is looking forward to when the day comes when Eastern Highlands has a rice industry that will cater for the demands within the province and in the country as well.
