Covid-19 Affects Harmony Drilling
Harmony Gold Exploration drilling program at its Webiak gold prospect located 14km north of Morobe’s Hidden Valley mine has been shut due to the coronavirus.
Drilling commenced on March 10 and terminated a week later on March 17.
Just one hole drilled out of the total eight. Harmony Gold made the decision to close down the program due to the health and safety concerns for its employees, contractors and the local community.
The wellbeing and health of our staff, contractors, local employees and the community was paramount in making the decision according to the resource development and corporate affairs general manager, Bernard Kavanamur.
The shutdown has resulted in the temporary layoffs of staff and has also affected contractors and local employees in the area.
They will continue to assess how this worldwide pandemic goes and will decide when to recall Harmony Gold exploration employees back to work.
Mr Kavanamur said like many business in the country and around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected Harmony Gold’s business operations in PNG and South Africa.
